Iconography and Re-Reading af a Gallo-Roman Mosaic with Multiple Decor of Vienne (Narbonensis) A large number of isolated panels of mosaics, discovered during the nineteenth century, have been preserved, sometimes forgotten in private collections and have not been studied. In many cases, we do not know their exact provenance. In the present article, we propose to study a panel of mosaic representing a deer, whose provenance is probably Vienne (Gallia Narbonensis) and is now kept in a private collection. This panel, according to comparisons with the other mosaics found at Vienne and in the two suburbs of Sainte-Colombe and Saint-Romain-en-Gal, seems to belong to a multiple decor pavement mentioned by Adrien Blanchet in the Inventaire des mosaïques de la Gaule in 1909. The mosaic of the deer is certainly a panel disappeared after its discovery in 1867. We propose a new interpretation of the decor placing our panel with those from the same pavement still preserved in the archaeological museum, (church Saint-Pierre de Vienne): The four seasons, a lion, a dog, Theseus abandoning Ariadne and Ariadne asleep. Öz 19. yüzyılda keşfedilmiş pek çok ayrılmış mozaik paneli, günümüze kadar korunmuş olup kimi zaman ise özel koleksiyonlarda unutulmuştur ve incelenmemiştir. Bu mozaiklerin pek çoğunun menşei ise tam olarak bilinme-mektedir. Bu çalışmada muhtemel buluntu yeri Vienne (Narbonne) olan ve hâlihazırda özel bir koleksiyonda saklanan geyik betimli bir mozaik paneli ele alınacaktır. Vienne ile Sainte-Colombe ve Sain-Romain-en-Gal kentlerinde bulunan diğer mozaik döşemelerle karşılaştırma yapıldığında bu mozaik, Adrien Blanchet'nin 1909 yılında yayınladığı Inventaire des mosaïques de la Gaule isimli çalışmasında sözü edilen çok betimli bir mozaiğe ait olmalıdır. Geyik betimli bu panel, mozaiğin 1867 yılında bulunduktan hemen sonra kaybolan eksik kısmıdır. Bu makalede, geyik betimli bu döşemenin, mozaiğin Arkeoloji Müzesi'nde (Saint-Pierre de Vienne Kilisesi) korunan diğer parçalarıyla, yani dört mevsim, bir aslan, Theseus'un Ariadne'yi terk etmesi ve Ariadne'nin uyurken betimlendiği parçalarla birlikte değerlendirilerek yeni bir yorum getirilmesi amaçlanmaktadır.

Dans le cadre d’un questionnement sur les ateliers et les échanges, il semble pertinent de présenter les corrélations qui peuvent exister entre les représentations géométriques et les représentations florales décorant les mosaïques hérodiennes en Israël, entre la fin du Ier siècle av. J.-C. et le début du Ier siècle ap. J.-C. En effet, le répertoire iconographique des pavements de Massada, de Jérusalem, de l’Hérodium… puise dans la tradition hellénistique, mais également romaine en adoptant des décors, qu’il est difficile de définir du point de vue structurel. Cette étude tentera de définir quels sont les apports du monde gréco-romain et ceux de traditions plus locales. 

Abstract
If one subjects the workshops and mutual influences between craftsmen to closer scrutiny, it seems relevant to present links which may exist between the geometrical representations and the floral representations decorating the herodian mosaics in Israel, between the end of the 1st century BC and the beginning of the 1st first century AD. Indeed, the iconographic repertory of the pavements from Masada, Jerusalem, Herodium, etc. draws on the Hellenistic but also Roman tradition by adopting schemes which are difficult to define from the structural point of view. This study attempts to define which contributions arise from the Greco-Roman world and which from more local traditions

After a brief presentation of the various materials used in these pavements and the description of their decorative repertoires, we discuss the question of vocabulary. Indeed, for several years, many problems of terminology divide the scientific community. The study of ancient texts and the different interpretations of the De Architectura of Vitruvius, rather than clarifying the study of this type of pavement lead to make it more confusing. A detailed commentary of the new terminology defined by Italian researchers, shows that it is not easy to standardize the descriptions. Further difficulties arise when it comes to translate a word in another language, as interpretation often generates new ambiguities. I consider mortar pavements as the most suitable general term for this pavement type, because mortar is the basic component and at the same time the most neutral term. Finally, it seems appropriate to revisit the term of terrazzo-signinum used widely, (perhaps wrongly) in the French archaeological literature.

L’ouvrage rassemble onze recherches présentées au cours d’une journée d’études qui s’est tenue à l’Institut Catholique de Paris (ICP) le 11 mai 2017 sur le thème « Les circulations entre Orient et Occident : à propos du Proche-Orient hellénistique et romain ».
Organisé par Caroline Arnould-Béhar et Véronique Vassal, toutes deux historiennes de l’art de l’Antiquité.
Alors que la situation de l’archéologie et de la conservation du patrimoine connaît une phase critique dans une partie de la région concernée, le Département d’histoire de l’art de l’ICP a souhaité inviter dans ses locaux de la Faculté des Lettres des spécialistes, archéologues, historiens et historiens d’art, chercheurs de renom et jeunes chercheurs aux compétences très variées, afin qu’ils partagent leurs découvertes. Douze chercheurs ont ainsi échangé autour de leurs travaux. L’ambition des organisatrices est de renouveler chaque année ces rencontres autour de l’art et l’archéologie du Proche-Orient hellénistique et romain en en diversifiant les axes.
Le thème retenu pour 2017, celui des circulations entre Orient et Occident, est un sujet très vaste, dont seuls certains aspects ont été traités, ce qui a justifié l’organisation d’une deuxième journée sur le même thème, programmée le 29 mai 2018.

L’ambition de cette journée est d'étudier les échanges culturels, artistiques et les évolutions techniques entre l’Orient et l’Occident. Cette recherche couvre un vaste domaine géographique : Jérusalem et la Judée hérodienne, Europos-Doura, le royaume nabatéen, le Liban romain....

De l'architecture à l'art des jardins, les thématiques touchent à l’architecture religieuse, aux décors privés, aux jardins et à l’art funéraire grâce aux contributions des spécialistes de l'ICP et d'autres chercheurs venus de différentes universités françaises. Leurs compétences croisées permettent de réaliser un état des lieux de la recherche dans un domaine qui connaît de nouveaux développements, celui de l’art du Proche-Orient hellénistique et romain.
